DNA methylation is a biological process by which methyl groups are added to the DNA molecule. Methylation can change the activity of a DNA segment (such as a single gene like the Fragile X gene, FMR1) without changing the sequence. A DNA demethylating agent is a drug that undoes methylation by removing methyl groups.
