This repeat expansion occurs on the FMR1 gene, on the long arm of the X chromosome\. Most people have less than 55 repeated copies of three letters \(CGG\) at the start of their FMR1 gene\. Fragile X premutation carriers have between 55 and 200 copies of this CGG repeat\. Individuals with the Fragile X full mutation have over 200 copies of the CGG repeat and this can lead to Fragile X syndrome\.
